Somna Therapeutics LLC provides medical devices for the treatment of laryngopharyngeal reflux and extraesophageal acid reflux diseases. It offers Reflux Band, a non-pharmacologic, wearable device that prevents reflux into the larynx, pharynx, and lungs. The company was founded in 2012 and is based in Germantown, Wisconsin.

Doctor Designed, FDA Cleared

Reflux Band was first introduced as the Reza Band, named for its inventor, Dr. Reza Shaker, one of the founding partners of Somna Therapeutics. Its name was changed to Reflux Band to better align the product with what it was designed to help reduce: the symptoms associated with laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) due to acid reflux into the throat and lungs. The Reflux Band has been cleared by the FDA and is available in the U.S. and selected international markets.

Somna Therapeutics was founded in 2012 by Tom Shannon, Nick Maris, Jeff Harris and Reza Shaker in partnership with the Medical College of Wisconsin.

CONSUMER NEEDS AND THE REFLUX BAND SOLUTION

Acid reflux causes many challenging symptoms that constitute a spectrum of disorders, including chronic throat irritation and cough, hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing, postnasal drip, sleep disruption and pneumonia.

The Reflux Band is founded on scientific and clinical research conducted over 20 years by a leading gastroenterologist at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Clinical studies show that when external pressure is applied at the cricoid region, reflux is kept from passing through the UES, thereby reducing the chronic health problems associated with acid reflux into the throat and lungs. These studies also demonstrate significant improvement in patients’ pulmonary, pharyngeal, and laryngeal symptoms. 86% of patients had a successful outcome with significant reduction in symptoms after two weeks while physicians reported being satisfied with the Reflux Band 92% of the time.
